Great pics Sue. I've been to the Tatton Park show a few times now and have generally always thought the show gardens were the weakest element of this particular RHS show. Few are "relevant" or workable (even more so than the others) and seem to me to be more abstract than the other two big shows (flying bridges one of the exceptions Lol!!!). There seems to be a lot of gimmickry sculpture on hand to pad them out too. If this involves children, that's fine of course, anything to get them interested. I know that may be a sweeping statement from me as I'm usually more diplomatic but I just think the majority are poor, rushed and naive at Tatton and always have been from what I have seen both first hand, and in broadcasts and print. The plant stalls, floral and veg displays are always great, and of course it is a lovely setting to wander and peruse and still pluck the odd idea from the occasional garden .

Reluctantly I have to agree with you SteveN, I only went this year as someone told me it was to be different. The floral Marquee was as ever very good but the show gardens were more gimmicky than horticultural and very much the same as before. Some were quite clever but not enough about gardens/plants. We did enjoy the day though but I'll save my £56 next year. I only spent £20 on plants; a perennial white stock, 3 small chrasanths, and two lovely Pelargonium, Quantock May and Mystery. It's not that I have self control, just that I've no room!

I only bought one plant a Sanguisorba 'Pink Tanna' as there was a red 'Tanna' on one of the show gardens which was covered with bees & hoverflies so I thought that was a good advert for it! Like you Merlin I don't have any more room really & am just looking for the rose & something to go round it to fill my one & only space which is actually the veg. bed which I'm sacrificing! I agree some of the show gardens are too much hard landscaping but they're always interesting & lots of the back-to-backs are lovely & the bedding competition is unique to Tatton & very colourful, I like the way children are welcome, there are interactive exhibits for them & the schools & container competitions for them.

Sue, that's a fine example of restraint, there was so much to tempt. Now it's confession time, yesterday I widened one of my beds, it's the one we call 'Tatton 1" (ironically!) Only by 16" but it means I'll have room to re-jig it come Autumn. I'm going to make it predominantly 'bushy' partly to give height but with less maintenance in mind. I've already bought 3. At the shady end a Hypericum 'Hidcote' at the other a Deutzia 'Strawberry fields' and in the middle a shrub rose 'Graham Thomas' a rose no one should be without Come bare-root time I'm going to buy two more shrub roses to go each side of our new 'ornate' pond bench. Lady of Shallot and Jubilee Celebration....delicious

They were all very interesting but I wouldn't want any of them. I wouldn't say no to the woodshed (complete with solar panels and wood ;D) in No.4 or the green oak fencing in No.3.

That's what I'm like, I wouldn't want any of them in their entirety but I like some of the planting & the ideas I would use if I had a larger garden, I'd like a building with a green roof & solar panels too.

the small gardens are nicer than the large ones for using some of the ideas, they give you a better idea of a 'normal size' garden

Some useful fencing ideas should there be a fuel shortage, nice for insects/birds too. What the butler saw, no, what Dinah saw! An idea for Steve perhaps Was it just too hot for you Sue ;D

Merlin you described the fence as being good for a fuel shortage. I thought that is what it was for until I noticed there was no roof so it would get wet. It does look effective.
