A few weeks ago I made a plan out for things to do each week. We have done all the sowing and planting jobs in the polytunnel but we haven't been able to do any outdoor sowing because the beds need weeding first and I haven't had time to do it. So, this afternoon I forked over the beds and some of the children helped with the weeding but there is still a lot to do.

Garden club started again after three weeks off. On the first week when there wasn't a garden club I went myself to weed the main veg beds so they are ready for planting. Two of the children planted the sweet corn which were in small pots. There were twelve so I told them to plant three rows of four because they should be planted in blocks rather than rows to help pollination. The children also planted the remaining onion sets in their own plots .They had been planted a month or so ago in drinking cups. I also took the children into the polytunnel and explained about taking side shoots off the tomatoes.

I forgot to tell you what we did in garden club yesterday. We planted courgettes, cauliflowers and peas and sowed radish and beetroot. I stayed a bit after the children had gone home to tie some tomatoes that needed doing.

Today I had two girls working with me (the rest were doing something with Gina). We planted some French beans, cabbage and lettuce and sowed some beetroot and carrots.I took a bottle of tomato food that I got from the hut last Saturday and I showed them how to feed the tomatoes. I explained to them that you only feed plants that have tomatoes on.

Didn't do much with the children today. Most of them were doing a bug hunt with Gina. One girl helped me to feed the tomatoes. I also pulled some large thistles out of the potato bed.

Today was the last garden club till September. The children all dug up the potatoes from their own plots .One boy fed the tomatoes. I carried on tying the tomato canes to the horizontal bar along the top of the polytunnel but didn't finish them. Also tied up some tomatoes that needed it. The rest of the summer I am still going to call at school every Thurdsday on my way home from Blackleach to feed the tomatoes and do any tying up that is needed.

Garden club started last week but I couldn't go but I went today. The children, two at a time, helped me in turn to dig up the potatoes and we got a large bucket full. The ground needs digging over again to get any that we missed (like I do on my allotment) next time I go but I don't think I can go for the next two weeks.

Went to the garden club at school for the first time for three weeks but I won't be going again till next year. There is one next week but I can't go then the week after it is half term. I don't think there will be any next term because there isn't much for the children to do at this time of year. The sweet corn has done well and we harvested all the cobs. I explained to the children how to test the cobs to see if they are ripe and they all were. The children all took one home.We picked all the tomatoes that were ready and put them in bags and they took these home as well. There are not many tomatoes left Even though I won't be going to any more garden clubs, in 2 or 3 weeks time I will go and pick the remaining tomatoes and get rid of the plants and empty the pots.

Garden club at school started again today. There were only two children but they are trying to get more. They had not done gardening before so Gina, who does the garden club with me,had to show them the tools we use and tell them the aspects of safety when using them. It was raining so we couldn't do anything outside .I took some onion sets that I got from the hut and we planted about 20 in drinking cups. They each took one of the planted ones home to grow at home. They also took some rhubarb home.

I told you last week that there were only two childen but there were six today.I intended getting them to sow some seeds, cabbage, lettuce and courgettes. However, the veg beds are full of weeds and because it was dry Gina suggested that the children do some weeding and I aggreed. It's no use growing veg in the polytunnel if we have nowhere to plant it when it needs planting. There were a lot of large tufts of grass, too big for children to get out with a hand fork,so I had to get them up with a digging fork and they scraped the soil off them .
