As you can see, we need a new spade....Graham doesn't know his own strength ;D ;D He left the bottom half in the ground at first ;D Can anyone recommend a good sturdy spade to replace it?

I will need to look at mine in the morning. I use it nearly every day. It is guaranteed for 10 years and I won it from a radio competition. It is an expensive spade with a beautiful handle and I just love it. The spade and my Felco pruners. No-one else is allowed to touch them. Before this, I had a Somerfield spade which was very good, but the plastic handle was not aesthetic.

I hope no one was hurt when it snapped. I had the prong of a fork snap off once when I was trying to dig up a Sanguisorba ....

I've got a Spear & Jackson stainless steel border spade which has been good so far, but then I haven't had to do any heavy digging with it

That is an excellent break Rosie, full marks to Graham, I've not broken one in that way yet. ;D
I haven't found an unbreakable spade yet but I can vouch for Spear and Jackson, it was the one that lasted the longest.
