That is good to know Peony. I normally choose the variety which has sold the most, it's not very scientific but it has worked so far. This year (for the first time) I made a note of the variety in my diary, now all I need to do is remember to make a note as to whether we like them or not. ;D ;D

I want to try some 'main crop' in bags this year. I am going to try them near the house to see if I can avoid blight.
Will an empty compost bag be large enough?

It should be fine WF but only put in a couple of tubers in one bag and turn the bag inside out so you get the black side facing out, it'll keep the compost/soil a bit warmer once the sun gets on it

When do I start to chit main crop potatoes? I found loads of information on how to chit and where to chit but there is no information on when to chit the different crops.
If I start to chit them now, wont they be ready to plant before it is warm enough?
Last year growing potatoes was easy, this year it has become complicated ;D

I chit early second earlies and main crop at the same time that was last month. Up here i normally plant end of March, some plant first earlies first, a couple of weeks later their second earlies and end of April maincrop. I plant them all at the same time myself about the 3rd week in March. Could be earlier where you are.

I'm still waiting for my order to come from T&M ....I've usually gpt them well chitted by now for planting at the end of the month. I had to buy a pack of Foremost at the GC the other day (T&M seed potatoes).....just in case they arrive very late....Wish I'd just bought them there, instead of fretting when they will arrive

Why is it said that "potatoes clean the soil"? I have been taught that potatoes are a good crop for a new garden to clear the soil and the next year it would be good for anything. Why?
