I'm going to try Unwins 'Atlas', a round carrot in a newly constructed raised bed that sits on my greenhouse staging. You shouldn't have any trouble with fly up there Mike.

i grow my exhibition carrots in these i fill it with one part horticultural sand, one part top soil, two parts compost, all sieved through a 1/4 " sieve, added to which is a combination of fertilisers.....nutrimate, BTD, dolomite of lime, seaweed meal. Get about 12 in each container...... down the allotment i grow giant flakkee as main crop picking from september onwards and tender snax....i pick these from july onwards, though they are bigger obviously if left longer. When sowing the carrots i sow in individual stations. I take out about 2" of soil with a simple bulb planter, fill it with sieved multi purpose compost/nutrimate, then carry on along the row at 4" intervals so i end up with about 40 stations in the row. I then put 4 or 5 seeds in each station....handy as some seed packets you don't get many seeds!! Takes a lot longer than sowing direct into rows, but saves a lot of time when it comes to thinning out. Also, keeps the weeds out. Finished preparing the bed today, covered the bed with fleece, will sow seeds first week in april.

What's the dimensions of that container scrumpy? We have clay soil and I don't think 16 months of trying to amend the garden beds will be enough to grow carrots yet. I already tried planting carrots and radish last year and all of them had forked roots. I was about to buy stumpy carrot seeds but I need to figure out how big my container should be. i grow my exhibition carrots in these i fill it with one part horticultural sand, one part top soil, two parts compost, all sieved through a 1/4 " sieve, added to which is a combination of fertilisers.....nutrimate, BTD, dolomite of lime, seaweed meal.
