T.... Will there be any mechanical help to get the lotties started? No - the plots will all be marked out by me and a couple of Officers and Snowdrop (who doesn't know yet!) - then the plots will be assigned and each is responsible for their own turf cutting. However, it has been an unused field since Adam was a lad and it appears it will be easy(ish) work. The lotties will be free for the first year due to the fact that we will all have to do our own cutting. This will hopefully show the location www.suziewarren.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Lottie-area.pdf

Looks like a nice pristine site from the photo, not infested with any 'nasty' weeds is it?

Looks like a nice pristine site from the photo, not infested with any 'nasty' weeds is it? It is very clean - erm, apart from the dog poo on the grass!! Thankfully we will have a large stock fence for keeping the little darlings of the patch Thats brilliant Suzie ;D have many folks signed up for the plots yet? It is brilliant indeed I am so chuffed - it's been such a chore drinking so much coffee at all the meetings between me 'n he ;D We have 16 plots, currently only seven are taken, although we had it filled on the first round of interest just over a year ago... but I'm pretty sure it will be self-perpetuating. This is the final layout of the total area, the blobs in the middle are tables and a BBQ area www.suziewarren.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Lottie-plan.pdf

Brilliant and at the right time of the year too.
I dug all my beds in ground which hadn't been touched for decades, it was a lot easier than I thought and so satisfying. The beauty of slicing the turf off the top means 90% of the weeds and weed seeds get removed with it.
I love the idea of the BBQ area in the centre.

When the turf has rotted down, in about 12 months, you will have some good loam there.

Indeed Tel - we have an area put aside for all the turf On that, am I right in thinking it is best stacked grass-to-grass rather than grass-to-soil?

I did 'grass to grass' when I dug up our lawns & it rotted down nicely. You'll have to organise a trip to the 'Edible Garden Show' for all your new allotmenteers to get some tips & ideas!

I know exactly where that is looks fab I was bought up in Lower Stondon just up the road and had a lot of friends on Henlow base, my parents still live there now. My allotment is not far from there on the edge of Ickleford/Hitchin.
Hope it all goes well and all the plots are full up in no time
