It was my idea Tel. I don't know why they don't go in for them over there where there is just rock and no soil to speak of. Moira knew it would work because of mine.
Sue, the seeds were unbelievably fast to germinate and then grow.
A problem came up with planting the chilli plant. It was meant to go into the soil beside the raised bed, but I could not get the spade into the soil, so it ended up in the raised bed too. They can always extend the bed and I am sure they will.
There is a 'woofer' coming next week to help in the garden. They come from all over the world, like backpackers really. They help out for food and bed. The last ones built the chook pen. I think one was from Germany and one was Swiss. This next one is a girl from Spain. Moira asks for only four hours a day. They get beautiful food and are taken anywhere on the island as they don't have transport. They team up with friends.

I need not have worried about the chilli. The rock wallabies have eaten it down to a stick.

It seems very strange hearing about wallabies eating your plants instead of slugs ;D

I'm sorry I missed this one Cherry, as I had to do a fair bit of traveling to check out houses we could rent in NZ. About the heliconia if the roots are the white skinny ones no problem about it coming up, but if it's the brown fat ones (on their way to becoming tubers) just tell Moira that if the soil in the bed starts growing higher the helis underneath are probably already growing and pushing the weed fabric up... had it happen to me lots of times. A quick fix a neighbor taught me was to water the area with vinegar twice in a day then let it rest for a week before building a new bed/transplanting other stuff. Don't know if vinegar will affect the soil pH or something but it really does kill any errant helis left in the ground.

I did miss you JRae. The veg bed is "done and dusted" and all is growing away nicely. However, I will pass that info on to Moira. You would like some of the plants we bought which are in "What's your latest plant purchase?". You were always in my mind when we were visiting the ginger nursery at El Arish and Port Douglas which is purely a resort town, but with loads of gingers.
