Even though they've been in the cold frame since November, they are starting to really take off thanks to this mild weather we've had. Most looking healthy, one or two have damped off. Desperately need a nice long cold spell to slow them down and get the laterals growing. Anyway, as they are a bit lush on top, and as I'm a few short on my seedlings, I'm going to try and root some. Never done it before but it's worth a go. I'll stop them middle of February by taking a cutting two leaves below the growing point and root them same way as I do my dahlias. If successful I may even be able to post out the spares if anyone is interested

Well I took some cuttings 20th January. Placed them in 20 cell trays in humax compost. Covered them with a lid. Lost a few but they are starting to root. With a bit of luck i'll have a further 8 red ones, and 8 sir jimmy lookalikes to pot on.
Just got to see how they grow now.

All the rooted cuttings stopped now. Will see how the laterals develop, and will plant out early April. My other sweet peas are ready to go out now !!

Still. they are a hardy lot and will get planted out even if I have to wait for weeks yet. ps I seldom stop mine as I end up with too many side shoots which means I have more work to do on them later.

Same here. The beds are so wet it'll take 2 weeks of hot weather to dry them out before I can get the fertiliser on.

Plan slightly changed. Going to plant out the ones that are growing away strongly at home today and tomorrow. Going for 10 each of 8 varieties, 18 of one variety...probably pink/cream, and 2 of lavender flush. Down the allotment there will be 8 each of 8 varieties, but that is where the soil is still extremely wet so will leave that to dry out a bit longer yet. Should therefore have a minimum of 18 plants each of 9 varieties provided the cuttings grow as I hope they will.

All planted now apart from the cuttings. Just need 8 of 2 varieties...white and sir jimmy lookalike. Quite a lot spare that are all in rootrainers that will go to friends. Plants are probably the best I've ever put out, really good roots. They certainly like the Humax compost.

Well 2 months since planting, plants looking really healthy, some nearly 4 foot tall, but no spikes yet Plenty have formed in the axils but none have developed. At this rate, I'll be lowering them before they've flowered.
