I've been following this debate for about a week on Twitter, Sara Venn has had much to do with bringing it to everyones attention

The problem is that it is cheaper to buy flowers/plants from Holland and Belgium than it is to buy home grown ones. When you buy pots of flowering roses or half standard lavender in October/November they weren`t grown here, they were grown in giant glasshouses in Holland.

That bouquet in the link isn't cheap though lol! £195! For that price they could be home-grown surely...
I mean Wiggly Wigglers Florist (I think it's called The Great British Florist now) does all home-grown stuff and their bouquets are £35-£50. Still more than I can afford, and I admit they don't have roses/chrysanths etc cos they are out of season here - but they're still gorgeous - I was lucky enough to've been given one before and they're also enormous.

You must be popular Bess. I never want flowers for Valentine's Day because of the added expense. Same with Mothering Sunday. I stopped my son from sending flowers for my birthday from the oil rig. They are dearer and celebrate Christmas, not my birthday which is close. He will treat me when I visit Scotland next week. Much better. steve you say you have been reading this article with interest. I knew nothing about it.

I think we should support the british growers (although I seldom buy cut flowers - Beryl thinks they are a waste of money. She always sais "they only die")
and I also think people have to consider the cost of things.

@hywel you could keep a vase filled from your garden. I am rather like your wife, and always have a small vase in the kitchen with garden flowers. Even one flower suits me. A plant costs the same money as flowers.

A plant costs the same money as flowers. I agree Cherry. Beryl and I both like to cut flowers from the garden, ... and sometimes, like you, it may only be one flower . We like to grow some flowers that are especially suitable for cutting. Sometimes I just like to cut some leaves. They can look very nice in a simple vase ... In my comment I was referring to bought flowers

I'd read about it on Twitter too , it seems the RHS added that the Interflora bouquet had been released on it's own in error & they'd meant to have promoted a Tregothnan British grown bouquet also & were trying to point out the differences? They've agreed to work with Sara Venn to get a better relationship with British growers as they appear to have upset the entire homegrown industry with this!

You know what I mean I'm sure. I just love it too much in the garden.

Yes, I can understand that Cherry Some things are just for looking at ! and that Daphne is beautiful. I just googled it. I don't blame you for not wanting to cut it. Every Daphne I've tried has died ... both here and in the previous garden.

£195 wow ! well I certainly hope hubby DOES NOT sent me anything like that, at that price, I don`t really like receiving cut flowers as a general rule. Oops there`s a white van at the door maybe I spoke too soon ....... Phew just Hermes with my thermostat

Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' is the easiest one I grow and the most difficult for me is, would you believe, Dahpne odora. Why not give it another try @hywel.
