I haven't seen any comments about this, but I wonder what you think of the coverage on television so far.
I think you all know I don't like Monty Don, but I felt sorry for him thinking he had had an accident with his leg or ankle because he needed a walking stick. However, I think it is just for effect.
The gardens are very middle of the road I think. There is nothing to dislike and a lot to like.

Not my kind of show really, I like to see all the exhibits, grown by people like myself at a show.

I've watched bits of it & it does seem a bit dull this year but it's nice to see some young designers doing well. There was a lady on tonight's show Cherry who reminded me of you, she was originally Australian but lives here & did a lovely garden, I think it was called The Topiarist garden & it was a recreation of part of West Green House garden.

Just my personal opinion of course but I think a lot of it is too arty farty for my taste. I much prefer Hampton Court anyway. I wonder how many people in the real world actually recreate these show gardens in their own patch. As for the presenting as long as the person doing it is knowledgeable and can communicate that knowledge to the viewer then it doesn't matter who it is. I don't go along with fads in gardening. If you like it, grow it or not as the case may be. just because someone says these blue flowers don't go with these red or yellow ones doesn't make it wrong. I have the humble daisy growing in much of my garden and they are welcome.

I would like to go to Chelsea Flower Show just once I think, i'd really like to see inside the show tent properly - it looks like it must be gorgeous but there's always a presenter/celebrity standing right in front of what you want to see on tv! I can't imagine I'll make it there any time soon, but maybe a good thing... I bet it's expensive.
The gardens all often seem 'much of a muchness' to me too, Cherry, but again it's only from photos. The ones they take photos of are all way to tasteful for me, too!

What annoys me most about the coverage is that they keep going off elsewhere - for example, to the Somme. I want to see the exhibits, not a long explanation of what inspired the designers! I do think the gardens are very temporary - that river of blue Irises looks wonderful - but what about the rest of the year? They're not gardeners, they're just designers.

I'm not really interested in it. I always find the gardens rather stiff and too 'designed' (although I do realise a lot of work goes into them) ... and I don't like Monty don. He's like a block of wood
And they never show any cacti or Fuchsias - and those are my favourite plants.

I did go to Chelsea some years ago, and you're right Bess it was an expensive day out. I found it far too crowded, difficult to see the show gardens with so many people crowded around them and nowhere to sit and rest unless you bought expensive food or drink. Also you can't buy any of the plants, only place orders.
I don't like Monty Don's presentation style and, like Geranium, I would prefer to see much more of the exhibits. The show gardens are just that, for show, to advertise their sponsor and designer, and have little relevance for the average gardener.

I was just saying how crowded it looks peony , on TV there are thousands of people crammed together in the background of the shots with Monty etc. on the balcony & it looks like you can hardly breathe never mind see the exhibits. I've always thought it would be nice to see it just once but don't think I'll ever get round to it & I do prefer the smaller ( & cheaper! ) more 'friendly' shows up here like Tatton & Harrogate.

The RHS shows are so expensive that a national exhibitor and nursery has pulled out because he said after people had paid to get in, there was no money left in the budget for plants. I have forgotten which nursery this is, but it is well known and the owner now prefers smaller shows where he actually makes more money.
Sophie Raworth proved to be really good I think. She added quality and class and an experienced interviewing style.

To be honest i hardly watched any of chelsea, it's all too staged. Monty is growing on me, esp on gardeners world. Beechgrove is still the best even though GW has played REM's gardening at night twice already in this series

Monty Don lives just up the road from us here, and you only have to mention him to induce rage from the locals! I haven't lived here long enough to be 'a local' myself, which is probably why I'm not really sure why he does make people so mad. He seems to have a way with him.
I would love to see 'behind the scenes' at Chelsea, people hairdrying their plants and other tricks to make them grow. That must be interesting.

I only saw a couple of the programmes, but I got irritated by the coverage. Why don't they put the names of any of the new plants on the screen? (Not that I saw many!)

That is a good point Geranium. In fact, there were not many plants profiled. All the above are very valid comments and it would be good if these were read by the RHS organizers.
