@hywel I am growing over 60 in pots. From display, seedlings and also for show. The show one's we will have to see how they do. The growth is good and comparable to the ground it seems.
I would suggest for pots either use ceramic or plastic not terracotta. The larger the pot the better at least 10 to 15litres .
Lou78W also has grown a lot in pots to great success.
The mix I use as recommended by scrumpy is a third John innes no 3 to two thirds good quality peat based multipurpose with vermiculite. I would also add a sprinkle of water retaining gel or crystals around the base of the plant. Use a time release fertilizer such a osmocote but you will need to feed on top of this when in flower. Keep moist at the start and once in good growth gradually increase the water. I would give them a good soak twice a week rather than little and often.
Heather linford and Spanish conquest are in pots. I would stick to a dahlia around 2.5 feet or below in a pot like the melody or gallery collection and some singles etc... Saying that I am growing some big ones in pots ! Hehehe
I would give it another try.
SueA one I think would be fab in the garden is kenora sunset . Beast of a plant loads of good size flowers and produces side shoots on its own without "stopping" has the wow factor. Just a tip lots of potash as rubbery stems and give it space it gets a huge plant. Tarahati ruby is another great for the garden a waterlily type my friend grows it in her display and it flowers non stop. Both can be show blooms if you choose to grow that way.
