I grow gooseberries in pots grindle, I've got two at the moment a green one & a red one which I got from B&Q really cheap a couple of years ago, I'm not sure which varieties they are (I'll go & look if it's on a label later) but the red one is very good. The only trouble is the pesky sawfly larvae which strip the leaves but the fruit is left alone.

I found the names on mine grindle , they're Hinnomaki Red & Hinnomaki Green, the red one had the better crop. There are some nice 'spineless' varieties around now which would probably work as well.
