my acer is in a pot I put more soil round it as its hasnt any leaves on it will it still grow

It might be dead joysie21 as it should have leaves at this time of year, I have a couple in pots & the smaller one has died over the winter, if they get too wet & cold they can just die off. Sometimes they can lose leaves during the summer if they're in too dry & windy a spot but if yours hasn't shown any leaves at all yet this year it may have died, if it looks like it has buds & if you scrape a little bit of the outer bark off the stem & it's greenish underneath it may still be alive but if it looks brown & dry it has probably had it.

I've got two beautiful acers in largish pots which are doing really well. I move them in winter to be sheltered from cold/wind and replace the top 2" of compost/soil mix every Spring with ericaceous compost and sprinkle in some bone meal. They are truly lovely and cost me £1.25 each about 6 years ago but are now 4ft. in height. Trees of this size in garden centres are £50 each. I spotted some in Morrisons recently as small plants costing £1.75.
