When I lived in Surrey two of the most common and tiresome weeds I had to deal with were Alkanet and Marestail. Strangely enough I have never seen either since moving to S. Wales years ago. I suppose my worst weed now is Hairy Bittercress not counting the duckweed in the pond. I know the bittercress is easy to remove but it just gets everywhere and needs constant attention. So what is your worst weed then?

The bane of both my, and my Sister's, lives is Chickweed. Well... I say "bane".. that's probably over-egging it a bit. I mean, it's easy enough to pull up. But BOY... it gets EVERYWHERE. What I don't understand is how it arrived in the Roofgarden. Did you know that Hairy Bittercress (what a GREAT name..) is edible ? www.villasanraffaello.com/wild-edibles-foraging-guide-hairy-bittercress/

According to roofgardener's link @willow it tastes bitter/peppery & a bit like rocket - off out to get some to try-always popping up here & I like wild rocket. It does say if you don't like bitterness wilt it briefly in salted water. We have hairy bittercress, herb robert, dandelions, clover, red campion, willowherb & horsetail which appears everywhere here but I just pull them when I spot them, some of them I leave because I like them & some if I don't spot them then I'm not worried about them! Perhaps your hairy bittercress arived in the compost of a plant you bought in Roofy, it spreads like wildfire once it flowers & seeds.

Rosebay Willowherb is my favourite weed ! I just love the name. It's not a Rose. It's not Bay, it's not Willow, and its not a Herb. I think that is SPLENDID

The only reason willowherb is good is that Elephant Hawkmoths like it to eat I suppose bee's like it too but the fluffy fairy seedheads get everywhere

I used to pick bunches of rosebay willowherb & take them home to my mum when I was little, I thought they were really pretty - not sure mum appreciated them though! I tried a nibble of hairy bittercress roofgardener & it did have a peppery taste a bit like rocket with a 'green' background like dandelions also maybe a hint of cat wee but maybe that's just our garden (only joking - I did wash it first!)

Err, well I can imagine from how it smells Rosie & possibly I have tasted it without knowing as the little devils are always walking through the garden spraying everywhere, yeuch!
