Well, a big decision. Aside from the fact I'm announcing my retirement tomorrow, we have decided to take up our patio slabs in our medium-sized back garden and re-lay to lawn and borders.
I'm certainly going to be relying on lots of advice from you all!

add lots of sharp sand prior to turfing to help drainage.

That will keep you busy in your retirement chrism ! It's always nice to have a bit of lawn although I've taken great big chunks out of ours to make new & bigger curvy flower beds. As sweetpea says the ground will be very compacted & will probably have poor drainage under the slabs, I found that when I took up patches of lawn so I dug in lots of fresh compost for the beds.

Good thinking Chrism......a big lawn fan here plenty of thorough preparation esp with firming, raking and levelling pays big dividends. Now is a good time with a view to sowing seed in March or April Like Sue I often cut into my lawns to make bigger borders but there is nothing quite like a lawn.....to sit on, play on and to set the garden off. I even enjoy the mowing.....the smell of a freshly mown lawn is delightful

Nearly there! Patio removed, lawn laid, and a low dry stone wall is covering the brick wall between the two levels. I plan to put alpines in the wall to soften it up and add colour. Plus borders.
There’s no way of uploading photos on this forum for before and after photos?
Got to say, we’re really chuffed!

I save my photos on Imgur.com and then post a link to here. Easiest way I know of doing it.

chrism you should be able to upload photos straight from your computer/laptop by clicking on 'reply' then 'add image to post', click on 'browse photos from your computer' choose your photo & then click 'upload' & it will appear in your post. Other than that you can do as Geumlover says & if you have your photos on a photo hosting site you can click on the 'insert image' icon (in between the envelope & clapperboard icons at the top of the reply page here) & post a link from where you keep your photos.
