Nice Easter Cactus flower, Eli! I have 4 small plants from cuttings that I thought weren't go to survive in our kitchen. I have grown these, & Christmas Cactus, for 20 years! I got the original cuttings from the supermarket where my wife used to work. At that time they didn't used to wrap them up in cellophane & bits of the branches got broken off & I used to look in the trollies of plants & found several pieces. As I knew they could easily be rooted I took them home & have had plants ever since! Unfortunately my best & oldest Easter Cactus plant rotted away last year! The cutting aren't showing any signs of flowering this year - at least not yet but the mother plant sometimes flowered in May - so all hope is not lost yet.

Now that they wrap them up in cellophane so it's not very usual to find broken pieces any more!

I used to have cactus like the first picture when we lived in Spain. I had it for some years & it used to produce 100s of flowers & then later bright red seed capsules. It used to grow so much I divided it up over two pots & the new growths overflowed the sides of the half pots I grew them in. Little pieces were always falling off & they rooted very easily!

I'm sure you told me about that cactus a while ago balc2 and after you showed a photo of it we decided it was Mammillaria prolifera. It can be very pretty with lots of red berries. It is a smaller cactus than this one i.e. the individual 'stems' are smaller, and this one also has barbed spines which can get stuck in your fingers ... you can actually see them in the photo.

I believe you are quite right, Eli, on both counts!

Eli It's great to see that big plant in the hanging basket! It must have 100s of flowers! I have a plant like your Epiphyllum but I'm not sure if it is the same or a similar plant. It came from a friend who lived in Brazil for a great many years. He has several in his conservatory which are a very dark red. Some of the plants are many years old. He gave me a plant a couple of years ago but although it's growing well it shows no sign of wanting to flower yet! I have a cutting from it that is growing well but is obviously many times smaller than the plant it came from.Until it actually flowers I don't think it will be possible to id it.

I hope your Epiphyllum flowers soon balc2, it will be nice to find out what colour it is. I have a deep pink one but the one in the photo has taken a few years to produce this single flower. I'm hoping it will have more next year.

Daughter Victoria bought this cactus about 6 years ago Parodia mammulosa. It has now started to flower, for the first time for us. She is at uni so she will have to do with a photo.

Just a couple of days ago I was very surprised to see the Cactus in the kitchen window had open flowers! Less than a week ago I checked all the Cacti in the kitchen window but I didn't notice any buds forming!
I'm quite pleased with this little plant! It's also the only one that has ever flowered since they have been with me - about 3 years now I think!
We originally bought them for our granddaughter who had them for a couple of years befor her mum gave some of them to me as they weren't being looked after. Then one Christmas our granddaughter gave the rest to me & they have been on the kitchen windowsill ever since.
