That's true too. You can tell the world to go away when you have the 'important' things to do.

In a previous house i had a lot of land and a quarter of it i turned over to produce and as you say Lou, it's addictive and massively rewarding when you cook a meal that's all home grown produce.

It is a different world when you are on a allotment, when i rented my first one in the early nineties, i just want somewhere to grow more dahlias because there was not enough room in the garden at home. Took the allotment in November and spent every spare hour i could weather permitting on there over winter, clearing all the rubbish, then marking out where the dahlia beds were going. The dahlia beds were finished and wooden frame work built for covering the dahlias. added another two allotments since then. But i found they were stress relieving especially after a bad day at work. Just like Lou the allotment was for dahlias, but i soon started growing fruit and veg. ;D

Graham see's it as a chore...he says you do all that work one year and you have it all to do again the next, whats the point... That sounds like housework not gardening. ;D

Like most allotments now, there is a waiting list for them. We have a few that have taken allotments in the last 18 months including myself taking on a third one. It really annoys me when people take on a allotment and after their first visit to the plot, 12 months later they have not made any attempt to do anything with it.

We have had a waiting list for some time, but this year for various reasons several people gave up their allotments. All of those on the list have now been offered allotments and taken them only for some to give them up almost immediately. I also think the novelty is wearing off, and I blame TV hype they make it look so easy. and they start with a cleared piece of ground, no weeds and no digging. our allotment had not been touched for 2-3 yrs and the weeds were over our heads, we have only just got to the end after 3 yrs we kept if covered and worked our way along piece meal. its hard work but we enjoy it and there is nothing like fresh picked food on your plate the same day, and a freezer full of freshly frozen veg for the winter months.
