I've just learned that Persicaria is also known as Polygonum - when did that happen There was something the other day that shocked me too, why do things have to have more than one latin name

I don't know - I know one plant as Alyssum saxatile, but that's had a name change. It seems to be happening more and more, and it really irritates me.

I think it's daft for a plant to have more than one latin name. The Latin name is supposed to identify them all over the world. There are some cacti I know of with several latin names. It defeats the object

I don't think plants have two latin names, rather it is a change of name such as Coleus is now Solenostemon though most folk still refer to it as Coleus.

Although some garden centres still use the incorrect names and will then look up another and then find it. I am old enough to be able to recite lots of name changes.
