My latest ( and hopefully last) project at the allotment is to prepare the ground for a small orchard; mostly apple trees, perhaps a pear tree and a cherry. The aim is to dig individual beds for each tree.....but how big should the beds be?...I thought about 3ft x3ft..Is this too big...or too small?.. .they will be trees on a dwarfing rootstock.

Obviously you will do your own thing Lou but if it was me I would plant cordons in the allotment. Cheaper too.

They only have to be about 7 ft apart, so why would they get their own bed? Depending on how many you are having, remember to get the right pollinators.

These trees stay supported all their lives and M9 do not make a wide tree.

M9 is a good size (5 x 5ft)...I'm tending to go for M26....and they fruit in a reasonable timescale.....

Would you be game enough to snap the branches down as I described in NFU Farm Walk? This has slid to page 3 or 4 of General Gardening. It worked very well.
