Do other Acer owners see flat 'helicopter' type seed pods on their Acer dissectum ? My mother asked me to ask you if these are commonly seen because she doesn't recall ever seeing them on an Acer before. She likened them to the sycamore helicopter type seed pods. She's had the tree for some years now, it's in a huge pot, a healthy plant, and she just wondered if these are normal. I've looked in my RHS A-Z Encyclopedia and it does show images of these flat seed pod type things - i told her this so she's pleased there's not anything wrong with the plant but i thought i'd mention it here so others could give me more info for her.

yes they do get these seed forms. My A palmatum had them last year. it is typical of the acers. they are called sycaras after the sycamore tree. They belong to the same taxinoic group.

Fascinating to know they get these helicopters. I've never seen them on mine.

I noticed many Acers had seeds this year, I wondered if it was down to the cold winter. These were taken a few months ago, I want to see if I can germinate some when they are ripe

They are not ready yet. One of my Acers was covered in seeds in the spring, most of them disappeared and the few that are left are not ripe yet either.

I've collected and sown many of these over the years. Quite easy to grow from seed but you do get varying results. I only ever kept about three to grow on but lost them for different reasons. Some of the leaf colour was excellent come the autumn. I think its just down to luck if you get a good one or not but it is nice to have a go.
