My tree fern is still not showing any signs of life...so I think it is now dead ......Rather than pull it up I thought I would perhaps plant a fern in it.....Need a tallish one to show above the red acer...would the tree fern be a suitable host for a large one.....I was thinking perhaps the "Royal Fern"......all suggestions welcome ;D

Osmunda regalis needs moist conditions Lou to perform well so probably not the best.
Dryopteris filix-mas (is this the only hyphenated latin name??) is probably the best. Dryopteris affinis is a good one too.

Yes ditto what Steve says....it is a good idea though, when I first got one of my tree ferns I took off a few ferns that were naturally growing from spore on it....besides Dryopteris I would add Polystichum...may of which are evergreen (the Dryopteris will die down over winter) I have both these around the bottom of tree ferns where it gets very dry unless I remember to water and they thrive

I dug up a couple of ferns yesterday by the fence that never sees the sun. The root balls were to big to go in any of the pots i have, so each one was placed in a bin liner. They are now hobnobbing with the dahlias on the allotment, for the time been. ;D

Today I attempted to prepare the dead tree fern....to excavate the stump and plant a fern in.... First I tied the trunk with foam covered wire to help stabilize the trunk With an old bread knife I cut off the top layer and started cutting out the dead fibrous material... It soon became apparent that it was going be more or less impossible to dig out a big enough hole to accommodate compost and a fern... If the fern stump had been larger, I could have drilled a hole ok, but it was only a small one and I had visions of it shattering into tiny pieces.... I've taken a tiny fern that had seeded in the log edging and planted it in the hole I made, together with some compost....Hopefully it will root itself in ok. ;D

I can't see why that shouldn't work well.
