Just a quick question, with my new found wealth of horse droppings and the quantity of it that I can get I was wondering if I built a raised bed for carrots would the well rotted down horse droppings and grass clippings mixture be a suitable medium for them

Just one more question, how high should the bed be to beat the carrot fly but also give the carrots enough room to grow downwards

I always had fleece over my carrots AJ, or a frame with fleece attached to it. Carrot fly are meant to fly about 18" off the ground. If your manure is too fresh the roots will fork and you'll have weird shaped carrots ;D

It's a game of chance I suppose ;D

If your manure is too fresh the roots will fork and you'll have weird shaped carrots ;D I had some candle variety carrots growing in tubs last year for showing the top of the tubs were well over 4ft from the ground, so i thought they were safe from the dreaded carrot fly. They wasn't, so cover them to be on the safe side AJ

There are carrot fly resistant carrots on the market now. I will probably try one of those as well, any suggestion as per a good old fashioned type carrot that tastes like carrots used to taste when we were growing up
