I'd say a dark-leaved shrub in the centre, too. Maybe a Pittosporum tenuifolium or Physocarpus Op. 'Diablo' would do it. What do you think?

Maybe a nicer colour on the fence ?? Must admit I too thought the background.....take that whole planting as it is and put it in the middle of a garden and I couldn't fault it!

Sorry to keep you all in 'sussies' but I got side tracked, the pic was taken a month ago, then this happened...... I wanted to plant foxgloves, roses and tall cottagey stuff to surround this 'swing' bench....... at this point I remembered why I originally raised it. the area is extremely 'boggy' Too late now so, I carried on with the 'plan' but planted Rodgersias Ligularia, Grindle's Primulas, Schitsostalis, Astilbies and a 'Cornus 'midwinterfire' either side..... Because I still wanted perfumed roses to grow over it I built a couple of raised bits. I've ordered a nice blue Clem 'Viola' but am still struggling to find a rose. I want a rambler or climber with a 'lax' habit, strong perfume but no more than 8' to 10' high. I don't want an 'erect' rose as I want it to 'flop' over the seat.

You are a tease Merlin .....The new arrangement looks good but the planting you have will soon outgrow the space?....was thinking about your Rogersia Ligularia and Cornus.....they all get pretty big....unless yours are dwarfish types. If you want roses to have a lax habit over the seat......do you not plan on sitting on it?.....cos they would need to be pretty thornless, or you would get prickled!

Oh well - so much for wracking my brain, Merlin! What about 'Zepherine Drouhin'?

What did you do with all those lovely plants, Merlin? I can also recommend the new climbing rose I planted earlier this year - 'Alibaba'...remember? It's a repeat flowering rose in a lovely coral-pink and it's fragrant.

Etoile de Holland ticks most of the boxes but I'm not allowed red! Alibaba' is a cracker but a difficult colour to pair. I'm still not fully decided but I may go for two, one either side, left Zepfirine D and right Louise Odier so hopefully no prickling. From memory I think ZD will 'flop' over the seat roof with the help of some string. Zephirine should grow southwards over the roof and meet up with Louise Odier which will provide the perfume all summer. You're absolutely right about the overplanting as the Cornus alone will fill it eventually. I'll just have to prune carefully and see what happens. The Cornus will take a year or two before it gets too big but it faces west and will look nice in winter. Also it will like the wet soil. Most of the original plants have been re-homed as I've reduced some perennial clumps and have put some where the Ligularia, Rogersias were.

Maybe a nicer colour on the fence ?? I agree but it's some I had handy !! It's fading....slowly. The fence is to hide plant pots ect. under the raised beds in the GH.
