I have been meaning to post this since the thread was started. From the satellite it is frightening to see just how large and how any clay pits we have round here.

Have any of you looked at the dark places in the UK? There really aren't many - Exmoor is one of them. I find that scary!

I would have thought Scotland would have some dark places too.
Those satellite photos Louise posted do show the extent of the light pollution, it is quite amazing when you see it from space.

I believe ECC Quarries was the biggest firm in the country at one time. I remember an April fool gag on Westward TV years ago when they asked for volunteers to help paint the waste heaps green and to bring their own paintbrush they got loads of volunteers. Not the brightest sparks in the west Country I'm afraid ;D

They are now owned by Imerys. WBB was the other large, english company to mine clay, they are now also owned by the french, this time a company called Sibelco.
WBB used to own the mineral rights under our house. I may own my home but the french own the ground beneath it.

it's only when you see the satellite pictures that you realise, I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen that
