The Sparrowhawk has been here every day this week. When he is sitting near the feeders I don't look. He is doing the bird population a favour but I'd rather not see him doing it. He doesn't seem to bother with the wood pigeons, both were happily feeding while he was sat there.

Oh dear WF. The sparrowhawk takes the feral pigeons which are near the hangar, so I don't have to witness too much. I have only seen it near the house twice this year, but the birds at the feeders are too well protected in their bushy clothed fenced dog run.

It is a good thing he is a regular visitor, by feeding the birds I am keeping them all alive, he will pick off the week and the slow, leaving the strongest to breed.
I just don't want to watch him doing it.

I'm the same, they're beautiful & fascinating birds & have to feed themselves & their young but I feel a bit sad if I see one swooping down & there's one less cheeping little sparrow!

The limping pigeon is back and I can't help feeling pleased. This is a normal wood pigeon who lives at the front of the house. It must be 5 years old now. I have two collared doves on the feeders.

Must have been at least 8 starlings having a communal bath in the large plant saucer used for their water. There was more coming and going all the time. Also had a wren in the back yard seemingly undeterred by the other birds all around the feeding station. First one I've seen out in the open like that but OH says he/she is a regular visitor.

A pair of goldfinches have been visiting the garden for the last few days, wooryingly the sparrowhawk has also been watching the garden & swooped down at the sparrows the other day at the same time as a cat jumped out of the bushes, not sure who was more shocked ! Photos of the goldfinches, not very clear as they were high up in the cherry tree with the light behind them.

Can't see the colours Sue, but they are difficult to photograph.
My birds are slowing down now, so food must be more available. I don't know what though. The goldfinches are here fighting over the niger seeds. There are 6 of these in a group which has not changed all winter.

The pair of goldfinches keep coming back as do a pair of bluetits but the blackbirds have left the nest in the conifer outside the kitchen as a cat found it. A huge pair of woodpigeons have now taken up residence in the larger conifer & keep trying to balance on the bird feeders & peck at the seed treats!

I've watched the big dopey thing standing on a crosspiece of the arch & leaning forward trying to peck that seed heart, it's like someone bobbing for apples in a bowl, it pecks, the heart swings, the woodpigeon wobbles, it pecks again etc.! Quite funny to watch as it must only get a tiny bit of seed. ;D
