Red kites are a nuisance at my friends' house in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. They are spreading from the Chilterns where they were first released. I think they look impressive.

We now know that the Robin was chosen as the nation's favourite bird and will represent the UK. The Barn Owl (my favourite) was voted second place.

I voted for Robins, as they keep me company when gardening.

I voted for the robin too, I'm glad it won, there were other lovely birds on the shortlist like barn owls & puffins etc. but I though for a national bird it should be one which nearly everyone would see 'in the flesh' like a robin or blackbird or even a sparrow bit I suppose the robin is the cutest even if it is a feisty little devil!

Baby goldfinch in the garden today, it took it quite a while to figure out how to get niger seed out of the feeder though, it sat staring at it for ages!

The Sparrows do that sort of thing here SueA. we have put the feeders inside a cage, the slats are big enough to anything up to a blackbird in. The sparrows just sat and looked at it even though all the other birds were hopping in and out there are 2 collared doves who just sit on the top sticking their heads through the bars then wondering why they can't reach the food. Its quite amusing

The sparrows here are spending ages on the buddleia. I must have a look tomorrow evening if it's got aphids or something on the leaves, or whether they are just pecking the leaves for moisture with the weather being so dry. That said there's a bird bath across the other side of the garden if they are thirsty.

Saw this little bird flitting about in the shrubs by the window. Like a tiny sparrow with a reddish orange cap. I think it was a redpoll after checking the good book. No camera handy unfortunately.
