Tip I heard yesterday from a Hosta grower. (Might have been on GW Memory fails) Anyway what he recommended was garlic spray. Apparently you crush a garlic clove and soak in boiling water for a while then strain into a container and dilute for the actual spray. Apparently it doesn't actually kill the slugs but they leave well alone. Perhaps someone saw the programme and remembers the details better. I think it was on GW, but i listen to Joe Maiden on radio Leeds on a Sunday morning he is a big fan of garlic sprays, i keep saying i will give it a try on the brassicas because he says the cabbage white do not like the smell so keep off them.

I bet it smells awful - get your clothes peg ready, Wf! I'm a bit puzzled, though. If you have to buy a pack of Nematodes to get the mixture up and running, why not just use the packet? They don't 'keep', so you couldn't put it away for next year.

You don't have to use a bought packet, it's a cheat. If you grow your own it is a perpetual thing.
I won't be making any until next year, I want to see if it helps keeping the little blighter's out of my potatoes. I'm happy for the birds to keep the rest under control, they are doing a brilliant job so far, I must finally have the balance right.

Yes, fair enough - but I read in the article a 'Top Tip' which actually recommended taking a spoonful of powder, ie Nematodes, out of a bought packet! That's the daft bit. Anyway, I hope the home-made version works. Pity there isn't a way of making a brew to kill off our chafer grubs, too!

It must work because I trust Toby Buckland to do his homework with understanding. He was well taught.

When I moved in here slugs were a BIG problem, then I built two ponds, problem solved. In latter years the fish ate any frogspawn but since last winter when I lost the fish I've not seen one slug.

Pity there isn't a way of making a brew to kill off our chafer grubs, too! I can't see how it won't work with the nematodes which kill chafer bugs, they must be cultivated by the suppliers.
