Started tying in the mediums and giants today. Removed some early buds off Pim's Moonlight. Plants looking nice and growing quickly now, cannot make my mind up if they are ahead or behind. Think they are ahead. This time next week will give me more of an idea.

What with the expence of moving again then a large bill for a car repair, not sure if i can afford to cover this year, so if i cannot cover and the weather is a typical September with the damp nights i may also give it a miss, will have too see.

Went down to the allotment yesterday, found dahlia smut again the third year in a row. Sprayed all the plants with fungicide, the dahlia beds will have to be moved else where, if i continue to grow them in future. The seedlings on the other allotment are fine and healthy.

I actually have a flower on 'Roxy' which survived the winter in the flowerbed.

Probably telling you something you know Tel, Smut spores can over winter and remain in soil for 12 months plus, not good if it is on the tuber!

That's why I wash all the soil off my tubers before storing, and take off all lower leaves from the plants as they grow to prevent splashback. The spores will not live in soil alone, there has to be some vegetation of sorts from the dahlia present. I suppose the way to test is to swap allotments to see if smut develops then, as seedlings should be clean.

I think those dahlia beds where the spores are, need a rest from dahlias for a year or two, either that or continue to live with it.
