I have half a dozen cuttings big enough to take but am going to wait until there is a few more I will have a bigger batch in about 10 days. For the last 3 years I have used clonex hormone rooting gel along with jiffy sevens I find I dont loose as many cuttings doing it this way.I went through a spell a few year ago of losing 1 in 3 of every cutting I took, using the gel and jiffys on a soil warming cable I barely lose a cutting.I buy the gel off ebay its about £10 for a 250ml bottle and is easily enough for the season. Oakwood goldcrest is the only variety that is not showing any signs of life.

Talking to Frank Taylor, he says Oakwood is a very slow starter. I ordered some tubers of it from him and he said after a month he had no signs of anything. Needless to say, neither have I. After a very worrying start, i'm finally seeing some eyes on my tubers. Fairway Spur, Ryecroft Rebel, Brenda T, Susan Gilliott and Staleen Condessa yet to wake up

Taken some more cuttings this morning. It surprises me how the tubers seem to produce cuttings differently from year to year, last year at this time, Mary's Jomanda was producing cuttings for fun. This year not taken any yet and they are just showing now along with Ruby and Karenglen, yet Kenora Challenger is going mad producing cuttings. ;D

Same here, Mary's Jomanda just showing eyes, yet Sir Alf, when last year i got one cutting only, is going mad!! Ryecroft Magnum and Staleen Condessa are still not showing anything. Just one Fairway Spur tuber has started with the one eye showing

It surprises me how the tubers seem to produce cuttings differently from year to year...
You are bang on Tel; the weirdest things happen. Last year and this Lavender Perfection is going great guns really early; since I first became involved with taking cuttings and so forth (50 years ago) I've never know it to propagate quickly. On the other hand, Glory van Heemstede which normally grows like a weed is really slow this year. Go figure ...

Had a good couple of days giving the garden it's first digging. Been a good test for the new knee and touch wood it's held up well. Incorporated loads of bags of Keith Singleton Just Naturally into it. Will leave the soil rough and let nature do it's work until May when i'll fertilise it. Good stuff that is a doddle to work with. For those that haven't used his products and buy lots of compost etc, his stuff is as it says on his web site. Everything is based on 100% peat....no green stuff at all, and is incredibly easy to work with....very few large lumps of peat etc. And he does every compost you can imagine. Well recommended
