I have a couple outside that came through the last 2 hard winters and are thriving I'll look the name up, it is pteris though and a friend brought them back from Nepal which accounts for the hardiness ;D

did any of the eden ones come up? Yes, I have two pots of those, the first one I forgot to sterilise the soil so I did a second one to be safe, they are both doing well.

Of course not all those gametophytes will go on to produce a tiny frond and not all the ones with a tiny frond will go on to survive so they do get thinned out in due course

This is the first time I've tried growing from spores so I don't know what to expect. Natural thinning sounds good, I'm not very good at restricting the number of seedlings I prick out to the number I need

I took this photo of the gametophytes which I split, they seem to be growing well. I took it so I could get a much better look at it and to see if I could spot the beginnings of fronds. It is just time that is required, the warmth of spring or both?

They still look healthy, and can take up to a year sometimes more to change in to a fern, The gametophytes produce both male and female sex cells and spraying them with water with a hand sprayer will help them to merge Have a read here too website.lineone.net/~margaret_cole/SFG7/growing%20ferns.htm

Thanks for the link, it seems I have a while to wait yet. In future I must remember to make a note of the date I sowed them.

The first fronds on Pteris have grown. The spores I collected at the Eden project are producing fronds too. Do you think I'm too late to separate them like I did the Pteris or should I leave them now? The second pot from Eden has died.

They need separating so they have room to grow on and expand Sue, looking very good
