Wouldn't it be great if someone could invent a system that works better in winter We'll never stop progress and one day our Grandchildren will look back at us with amusement at solar panels all over out houses ;D My own feeling is that 'fusion' is near.

We tried to get free solar panels but they aren't available in Scotland...we weren't too amused by that

We tried to get free solar panels but they aren't available in Scotland...we weren't too amused by that I doubt you've missed much there Rosie, especially up there. I've looked into my own solar and have decided it's not for me for several reasons. Those smart people who had it pre December are ok if they're young enough but there's too much uncertainty now. Also the FIT is not enough incentive without free electric which I wouldn't be able to take advantage of. I think the Gov should guarantee it at 30p not 21p I've decided to wait, after all the early bird may get the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese.

We would have liked the chance to try them Merlin, our house roof and the garage roof are south/south west facing so would have been perfect.

In view of your roof aspect, would you not consider having your own installed Rosie?

It would cost upwards of £9,000 to make it worthwhile Merlin, don't have that spare cash at the mo. We would love a windmill too but they cost from about £48,000 . Green energy is not a cheap thing to get into which is a shame, if it were more folks would take it.

I'm not absolutely sure but I think pre- Thatcher you weren't allowed to generate your oun power. I quite like it here but if I had to move I'd find a place by a stream

We tried to get free solar panels but they aren't available in Scotland...we weren't too amused by that The 'free' ones were made to sound a lot better than they were, it was the companies who fitted them who came away smelling of roses. The amount of free electricity you would get is relatively small, and you had to use it as it was generated, it was the money the government were paying which made it all worth while. Merlin, if you used water to generate power you would have to pay for it, your water authority owns the water.

The 'authorities' probably own the blood in our veins WF. I was wondering about Ground heat source (vertical) but I suppose we don't own the ground beneath us either I'm sitting here keeping warm with a portable gas heater as the boiler's stopped. I've had a word with my friend (boiler engineer) who'll fix it soon. He asked if I'd had an oil delivery, yes I said 3 days ago. He said some companies are adding cooking oil to the kerosene !! It burns but also mixes with any condensation in the tank and gels in the filter !!!!! It does seem to be a coincidence as it's the burner that's failed. Will investigate.

That is not good news about the oil, we pay enough for it Someone will own the mineral rights below your house but sinking pipes below for heat is still free. The water which circulates will be around 15 degrees, this is not enough to heat your house but bringing the temperature from 15 to 19 degrees will take a lot less energy than it would otherwise.

That happened here before we arrived and were told from various sources not to buy oil from that company, so they "shot themselves in the foot" and are now out of business. The customers just called it dirty oil. It is worth checking out and spreading the story.

That is absolutely shocking I will tell Emma this as she has oil fired heating.
