Got a few squash plants out in the yard and some of them have no problems at all but with the butternuts the squash grows quite a bit for a week or two then plant starts to dry up. I was wondering what could be the problem?
I dug one plant up and couldn't find any grubs or other pests down in the ground, plant doesn't have mildew either. I did hill them up when I planted the seeds and then added some more rotted manure and compost to make the hill bigger two weeks after the seeds broke through the soil.
There's also about 6 to 8 inches of straw spread on the bed so the only part of the plant that's in contact with the ground is the part with the roots under the hills. They have drip irrigation every morning and I checked the lines there wasn't any blockages so no water problems either.
Do you think I ought to just pull up all of the butternut squash plants and burn them? Maybe I had infected seeds or something like that and I don't want any diseases getting into the other squash plants as well. I got the seeds from a swap and not from the retail packet from the GC so maybe it's probably a virus of some sort.
