One of my tubers on the heated bench has just begun to show life, there is a tiny, tiny blip. All my other tubers not in compost, not on a heated bench, not being molly-coddled are shooting all over the place. Are they kept above 50f if so they will wake up. Some varieties show signs of life weeks before others. My Amber Festival has been on the heated bench since Jan it taken root but still no sign of it sprouting. I'm so glad you mentioned that Tel...the Tahoma is sprouting but the Bishop of Oxford isn't... I shall be patient.

Went to the Wisley Open Day today to meet up with the NDS folk at their "table". There were lots of interested people but I don't know if anyone actually joined I was given a packet of dahlia seeds, I'll let you know the results! And, of course, I blogged about it ... ;D One lady said that she always bought seeds from T&M which came as proper large and giants and no singles or mis-shapen blooms; can you believe it?

Have any of you ever had a shoot coming up through the stem like this? Yes Derek, I've seen this before but I can't explain it. It looks as if will be hollow, best to whip it off and get as many cuttings from the side shoots as you can, I'd expect them to be just fine.

My pleasure, we really do have to make Dahlias popular once again so anything I can do to get people involved, I will! Well between us dahlia growers, we have got a a few members to have a go at growing a few. I have looked at a few gardening forums, not seen one with as many members that have the experience of growing dahlias like this one. I think we are very fortunate to have so many, all in one forum.

Have any of you ever had a shoot coming up through the stem like this? yes....here's one i'm playing with at the moment The cutting started off exactly as yours, growing up the hollow stem. In my case, it was my only tuber of primrose pastelle, and it looked as if that was the only growth i was going to get from the tuber so major surgery was needed. I carefully sawed down the tuber and ended up with three pieces of tuber, took out the original cutting which looked hopeless, trimmed it down and have got fresh growth as shown from the inside. Hopefully when that one is taken i'll get some follow up eyes developing so may yet get 6 plants from it.
