Thanks Steve. I will be getting more exercise than I bargained for because I must go and cover the leaves. Possible frost has been mentioned here. It is hard work for me because the area is covered in thistles and nettles, but the potatoes are working by keeping the area 'clean'. After all, I have to work the earth.

Put some gloves on, pull up the nettles and thistles and lay them on top of the spud leaves....2 jobs in one go! ;D

However, I went over and buried a hare which had been pecked by birds, then cut off more nettles and thistles, just by cutting through with the spade and earthed up as you advised. The Red Duke of York spuds look very good and more advanced than the Pentland Javelin.
