I have saved a couple of dahlia pants from last years seedlings, to try again this season. This year i have planted up 600+ seedlings, what i am proposing is, if there is any decent blooms on this years crop of seedlings good enough for garden display, or maybe good enough for showing, i would pick out the best of them and along with the two saved from last year,post picture's of the one's i have selected, then ask the forum members to vote for their preference, for those that remember, as we did when the picture competition was on the go. If this is ok with the Forum Members, plus if it would be ok with Steve to receive the votes, then of course i would not know who voted for the winning dahlia. I would post the Pictures of the dahlia seedlings i have selected at the beginning of October. The one that is voted the overall winner, i would like to give it the name Garden Friends. Any comments and suggestions please on the idea.  |

That's a great idea Tel, would love to see them & vote even if I know nothing about dahlias & which ones are 'perfect' & would just vote on what I thought was the 'prettiest'! |

I think this is a wonderful idea and we would all be sharing in the name. Let's hope the weather is kind to the dahlias and it turns out to be a good year.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to sell them to members and give the money to a nominated charity. We used to do this with the calenders ;D

Yes, me too. What happens if we all choose different ones, though? Let's have a go, though.... We could pick 3 dahlias and give 5 points for first preference, 3 points for second preference and 1 point for third preference. Then if there is a tie, i have the casting vote.  ;D |

We used to do this with the calenders ;D Nothing like jumping the gun Rosie. ;D If one of last years seedlings is selected, there may be enough stock in 2013 If its one of this years seedlings that is selected, i have to get the one tuber through the winter and hope it throws a few cuttings next year. So it would be 2014 before there were reasonable stock of it. |

Sounds good to me but my only concern is that whether a dahlia (or any other flower) is any good should not just depend on the appearance of the flower but other factors as well such as the performance of the plant.
