Yesterday, I told you that I had put 8 sacks of plants on the compost heap on the allotment. I brought the empty bags home and now 7 of them are full again. I have removed the remaining bedding plants from the front garden and also emptied the hanging baskets that I had done for next door.

Shopping took all morning so I didn't have time for anything else. This afternoon I went to school. I have some winter onions to plant but the part bed where they are going needed weeding so I did that first . I then got rid of the runner beans and climbing French beans and put the canes away. I also got rid of the sweet corn, courgettes and dwarf French beans because they have all finished. I will take the onions and plant them next time I go.

This morning I weeded the border round the front lawn. It was easier now that the plants are all out. It is difficult to weed between them because they are very close together. I also planted a row of crocuses along the front of the rose bed in the front garden. I had some left so I planted them in two bowls. I also planted hyacinths in two bowls and some tulips in two pots. My friend Alan, across the road bought a dahlia that I have never grown, "Totally tangerine". I thought it was rather nice so he has given me the tuber then I can take cuttings of it next year and give him some plants and have a few myself if there is enough.

When I got home from Blackleach about 3.30 I took the 7 bags of plants that I filled the other day to the allotment and put them on the compost. Also removed yellow leaves from the sprouts again and brought home the last of the summer cabbages.

You know that I go to the supply hut of our horticultural society every Saturday morning (I just call it "the hut"). Today was the last Saturday to be open till next February, except that next Saturday we are having the A.G.M. there. This afternoon we went for a walk . One of our neighbours has lent Rosemary a scooter so she went on that. I went to Blackleach after to count the birds . I am not recording wild flowers again this year ever though there are still a few out. When I got home I finished removing the plants from the border I started yesterday.

This afternoon we went a walk with Rosemary on her scooter. I then went to the allotment. Took 4 bags of plants that I filled yesterday and put them on the compost. I then planted my winter onions, about 26 of them. I had to do a bit of weeding first where they were going and I raked in some fish, blood and bone fertiliser. I planted them on the brassica bed where other crops had been harvested. I plant them here because next year this will be the root crop bed which is the only bed that doesn't get manured in the winter. I couldn't manure the bed if there are onions growing in it, could I ? The onions were already growing in 3 inch pots.

It has been fine today and I have removed all the plants from the border alongside the back lawn on the opposite side to the one I did on Saturday. I then cut down the dahlias on one of my two beds. They had not been blackened by frost but those on the allotment were black about a week ago.

We couldn't go shopping this morning, as we usually do because our car was at a garage. Got it back later so we went shopping this afternoon instead. This morning I started digging up the dahlias that I had cut down and preparing them for storing. Couldn't cut the rest down because I had no empty sacks to put the tops in till I can go to the allotment again. Dahlia growers all have their own methods have storing them. Some wash them but I don't. I just clean off the loose soil with a large screwdriver then knock the screwdriver down the hollow stem and out at the bottom. This helps by releasing any water trapped in the stem. I then stand them upside down in boxes to drain and put the under the greenhouse staging.

Went on the allotment this morning. Took 8 bags of green material and put them on the compost, so I have some empty bags now. The bags I keep referring to ,that I keep filling , are 75 litre compost bags. I picked the last marrows and squashes and put those plants on the compost. I then begun dismantling the structure of canes where the runner beans and sweet peas had grown. The sweet pea plants had been removed a while ago but the runner beans were still there. I put most of the canes away in the shed but didn't have time to finish them. It is a work of art getting 8 foot canes into a 6 foot shed. This afternoon I went to Martyn's and took 4 bags of old compost and spread them on his borders. I also pruned his roses but he has only four. Now that I have some empty sacks, I cut down the rest of the dahlias down when I got home and put the tops in the sacks.

We had a wet wellbeing walk at Blackleach this morning. We haven't had a wet one for a few years. It is usually nice for us. Had some errands to do on the way home so I didn't get home till 3.45 but I went out after and dug up some more dahlias and prepared them for storage.

Rosemary's hairdresser came this morning so we couldn't go shopping till this afternoon which also meant that we couldn't go a walk. So I had this morning on the allotment. I finished taking down the runner bean canes , put all the plants on the compost and put all the canes away in the shed. I then started pulling up the annuals and putting them on the compost. What takes most of the time is removing the twistits, and rings etc. from the canes. Every plant is supported by a cane because they are flowers for cutting and therefore are on the tall side. After shopping this afternoon I finished digging up and storing the dahlias but I still have those on the allotment to do.

This morning we had our horticultural society A.G.M. at the hut. The hut is now closed till February. This afternoon I took Rosemary a walk in her wheelchair then went to school. I planted some winter onions then started emptying the tomato pots in the polytunnel. I first had to remove all the canes which were tied to a horizontal wire along the top. When emptying the pots I put some compost on one of the veg beds and some in bags to take to my allotment. I didn't have time to empty them all.

A bit colder today. We went a walk this afternoon with Rosemary on her scooter. I went to school after . I emptied the last eight tomato pots and put the compost on one of the veg beds. There were also 4 growbags and I put the compost from these on the same two beds that I had put the other compost on. Couldn't put any on the other two beds because there were still crops growing in them. The four bags that I filled yesterday I took to my allotment and put the compost on the empty bed that had grown potatoes.
