I've also received a parcel today of my Albion strawberry runner plants and it is snowing . So I went out in the snow (not exactly a blizzard admittedly) to go down to the garden to the trench with the flower pots on the tarpaulin, muttering they will laugh at me if I plant my strawberry plants in my strawberry pot in the lounge.

Good News Fairy Pink Wellies finished her Egyptian homework yesterday evening. Bad News She has spent the last 2 hours+ working on her Maths homework. Worse news she has got spellings to learn for Wednesday and random order x7s test on Friday. Last half term they just gave out the project.
HH thinks that it was 2+ rather than 3+ hours. (Still much too long)

I would not laugh as I sow seeds at the kitchen table every year. I make too much mess for the lounge room though. The school your daughter attends sounds good. She really has to get used to homework because it does not get any less as time goes on. Clever girl.

Her spellings this week are: morning, ignored, squawk, although, quarter, thwart, hoarse, sought, daughter & audience. I can't help it she only turned 8 last month. I used to get frustrated that her spellings were too easy and that she did not get any homework unlike other schools in our area. No gentle breaking them in period. The girls school is in not a good school, it is not on special measures but it is on the next level up. I never had the pressure that she is under.

The school is probably trying to keep above the danger zone and it sounds like it is working. Your daughter's education is therefore important to the teachers. Make sure she knows the meaning of each word. I love spelling, but your daughter could be better than me already at math. I will say it again, clever girl.

Sweetpea: I did classics Greek & Roman at 6th form and it is one of those subjects that come alive. I like places like York where you can feel the history oozing out of everywhere you look. Was not able to go on the Classics trip to see the temples etc but the visit to the British Museum and seeing the Elgin Marbles wonderful. I am not going to go on but I hate modern history. I am useless at remembering dates. The school is probably trying to keep above the danger zone and it sounds like it is working. Your daughter's education is therefore important to the teachers. Make sure she knows the meaning of each word. I love spelling, but your daughter could be better than me already at math. I will say it again, clever girl. She is a better speller than me but that is not surprising considering I was taught ITA, I hated spellings and tables. I always sit down with girls and write down each word and talk about what I call 'the story of the words'. Is there a pattern or if you break up words eg t ele ("L with a E on each side") 'ph' sound and the word 'one' Anything that gives her a visual picture supporting the phonics. I do believe that both girls' teachers do care about their education but I don't think they understand that we loose quality family time, opportunities for children to unwind and play which they need because school term time is very stressful. Fairy Pink Wellies has enjoyed this project more than her last one and it helps having an idea of what they want her to achieve. HH & I both believe that the children should get their homework done as early as possible, so Friday's English & Maths Homework is done ready for Monday rather than wait for Friday. It would stress all of us out too much if we didn't.
Anyway promise to stop moaning about school back to the gardening........

We did Asia at school, so I know about Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The wars take on more importance to Australians as the First World War made us grow up and think more independently. However, our history is your history and I did The Merchant of Venice in English.

However, our history is your history and I did The Merchant of Venice in English. I think that that sounds very sensible. I didn't do modern history at school my history was based on the Classics. I made the mistake of opting for history rather than RE because someone told me that the RE lecturer was very strict on spelling and the history lecturer was very inspirational we lots of history where we were including a Roman ampitheatre and baths, lots of castles. Fantastic. I did not realise that I was going to face degree exams based purely on modern world history. All the other students had done o'level and A'level history already knew it all. I had put myself at a real disadvantage. In my opinion the most powerful poetry is the WW1 trench poems. Siegfried Sassoon 'The General' and of course 'Dulce et Decorum est' by Wilfred Owen that whole pointless waste of human lives.
Anyway back to the gardening... Finally got my T&M order through that I've been trying for ages with the bonus of free P&P. Much better deal.

Finally got my T&M order through that I've been trying for ages with the bonus of free P&P. Much better deal.
After reading that T&M had free P&P I thought that I would have another go at making that order. The shopping basket went through to check out added my details, submitted it. Then I get the following message:I checked my email, no email confirming order. Was more than a tad annoyed but had another go and it went through smoothly. I tried it on internet explorer rather than firefox which is what I usually use. I later check my email and have 2 email confirmations. 20 minutes apart.
Luckily my GRAND TOTAL: £3.48 Good thing I did not have a huge order but it does mean I've got a packet of seeds for the next seed swap.

My viola and lobelia plants are moving home tomorrow, they are going to live in our dining room but I want to keep pansys in the lounge because it is cooler in the lounge as the dining room is very sunny.
I want to sow my tomato seeds but as I have another order due and my Yellow tomatoes packet says March, I'm going to hang on a few more days.
Every time we have anything with plastic packaging that could be pot like I'm washing it up and saving it my plan is as I have a lot of things to plant, rather than do trays 2 varieties 1 each end. I thought that I'd use the small pots (anything from egg mayonnaise, tomatoes, muffins or plums.) instead smaller quantities more of a variety. The theory being I won't need to pot up 5,000 seedlings because little people have been enthusiastic with the sowing.
It is going to be a busy week this week but I want to try and find the time for the girls to do some cup cake cooking and wooden spoon monster making, that we didn't get the opportunity to do this half term holiday.
I'm also going to sow some sweet peas in toilet rolls and I have packet of easy to grow veggie seeds that are a year older than Fairy Pink Wellies, I am just going to chuck them in some soil and see if anything grows. Never know. Fingers crossed.
Tiny steps

Moonlight, re tomato seeds. If you work back 8 weeks (2 months) from the time you can reasonably plant them (Outdoors) then that is when to sow. eg. A safe time for outdoor planting in the south of England would be around late May so sow the seeds around end of March. Earlier if growing in a g'house. HTH

:)Exciting news my Downham Royal and Happy Halloween dahlias are on their way! Received an email saying that they had been posted yesterday 2nd class postage - untracked. I thought that this was not a good idea considering how rubbish and erratic our weather is right now. Dahlias from US are leaving their homes on Monday and beginning their voyage here. So everything should arrive at around the same time. emphasis on the word 'should'
Tiny steps.

HTH You always help me Sweetpea and I really appreciate it. I want to grow some inside the greenhouse and some out.
The other seeds arrived a couple of days ago. The tomato that I was after was Red Whopper (and Mum is still adamant that it was Red Whopper not Whopper which is what my sister thinks - I'm staying out of it ).
In addition to Whopper I ordered Chocolate Cherry because it sounded a bit different to normal tomatoes and you know me, I like things that are a little bit different. I also got small sample packs of Guernsey Island and Stump of the world. The samples are a couple of years old rather than last year's so should be ok but slightly less might germinate.
I think I should go into making chilli sauce, tomato pasta source and relish production with all the tomatoes I will have growing. Madness but jolly good fun. (I hope) but then I'd have to be able to cook to do that
Tiny mad steps...
