replies 1st: Cherry and Lou, Yes I live in the UK, met my husband in Wales, he's from the West country and I'm from the East (sounds an awful lot more exotic than it reads) and I work part time in London, no specifics at this time but if I were to ever win anything show wise then I will because I'll be too excited to keep my mouth shut. At the moment right here right now this seems to be cloud cuckoo land dream but you never know. What my (current long, long) term goal is to enter the Novice cup at my local show. I am not knocking myself but I need to learn how to successfully grow things, my garden needs to become alive and beautiful first. That is my long term goal, to create a garden which my family and I love to be in, whilst not sacrificing the wildlife.
I can't help it I grew up in a family where my Dad grew dahlias, showed and judged them. My Mum supported my father in growing them watering etc. etc. as he worked full time and she stayed at home after having me but the dahlias were always very much his while the runner beans and tomatoes I associated with my Mum. My Dad stopped growing for a long time which really upset me because he was so good at it but he had his reasons. Since he has been growing again to me it is like he has come alive again and his passion has rubbed off on me and for me the icing on the cake was seeing him presented with his National Dahlia Society silver medal and his trophy for best dahlia in our local show. I can't be my Dad but I really would like to try, tiny, tiny steps in my own garden.

Do you really???....I'm a huge fan of the Westons mini cactus varieties....I have Pirate - I have Bucanneer too....its more of a dark burgundy with an irridescent purple haze overlaid; also Spanish Dancer and Sunup...... Lou, my family link to Weston are the family holidays we have have had at Weston-super-Mare. We go there because that it where OH side of the family live and he has special memories of going there as a child also. I could no longer resist buying sweetpeas because of the variety's link to 'fairy pink wellies' name where as 'pirate yellow wellies' name is a colour name and there are 100s of plants with that name around and quite a few with her 2nd name also (but none with both). It does seem that sooner or later 'pirate yellow wellies' will want everything pink and would not be seen dead in the pirate pyjamas that we found in the sales because she gets flack from the other girls at school for wearing her pirate hat and scarf because they are boys clothes. Where as we like the fact that she wants to be a little bit different to.
I've rambled a bit but I like the name Weston Pirate especially because I like the Pirate part, like the Weston association together with the fact that I really like the flower. My husband let me have the sweetpea variety because of the name and if I am brutally honest I was rather hoping that he would quite like that dahlia too. I did mention it to Grandad and I am secretly hoping that he will buy a tuber and give me a cutting I also like Weston Spanish Dancer but I am not even going to try mentioning that one Maybe next year

I know what you mean Ladybird. I've just noticed on the Sarah Raven catalogue that she has a purple (& a pink one) wheelbarrow £69.95!!! Never even thought about the cost . Feel bad for even adding it to my Christmas Wish list. I've got clothes for my birthday but I did not get anything kitcheny - think they know me better as I'm rubbish at cooking.
We went to Garden Centre on Saturday saw a purple watering can but didn't come home with it was more disappointed because didn't come home with any plants. OH did not fancy a Venus Fly Trap

If your dad raises any pink or yellow dahlia seedlngs you could name them Fairy Pink Wellies and Yellow Pirate Wellies. ;D Weston is already used though as a prefix.

Very quick update, got to get up early for work tomorrow. 5.30am No delivery - have been told that 2nd snotty email is being sent to company as it was ordered before Christmas and they emailed to say that it would be delivered today. etc. He is v.cross. While I am still very excited but now have 2 days at work and so chances are I wont be getting it any time soon.
On the plus side I've been told yes I can order a dahlia that I have been trying to get longer than Candy Jayne. (tried and failed, give up on that one until next year) which probably could not be more different.

Look what I've got! Purple Wellies and :-*Purple Wheelbarrow - just need to garden
They hid it from me when 'Fairy Pink Wellies' was opening her birthday presents. Very happy but not as excited as my little big girl. A good day, looking forward to Thursday.
