Feeling even more hot and sticky. I've used another sack of manure. Tomato plant is position, going to plant him when proper when the temp goes down a bit. I've also planted into big pots my Carrot top Clearview Arlene my one from America, that grew after being chopped and dunk into roota solution. The other is another Downham Royal but there is an outside chance that it could be a Weston Spanish Dancer erm mixed up labels (just don't tell my Dad) at the cutting stage. That leaves just 2 more Happy Halloweens that if they are anything like the others would be a waste of decent compost, if potted up.
What happened with my Happy Halloweens haven't a clue but the flowers have lost the colour. I won't be keeping any tubers from those plants.
It's too hot to faff about with photos but seeing is believing they really are that bad.

I've just noticed this when I was showing girlies plants that I have planted today.
I've left it be, I hope that I don't regret it.

I am using the opportunity to give the dahlias a jolly good drink whilst weeding as many of those little weeds that have come through. Followed up with a dressing of manure, with garnish of blue slug pellets. Hoping that the manure will keep the moisture in, suppress as many weeds as possible and offer some extra nutrients when it rains.
Well that's my plan anyway........
More to follow, including the fact that I was laughed today. Humphf. Gotta go got more weeding to do. Sunflowers for the girls to pot up and tomatoes to plant.
Fun, fun, fun.
Never did explain why I got laughed at.
We found Dad talking to the 'Pom man' on the allotment. There is a lot of rivalry between them both when it come to show time at local town horticultural show. Dad beat him by 1 point on the dahlia cut but if his poms hadn't been disqualified he would have beaten Dad by 3 points. It was a really hot day and we were about to leave when I mentioned that I'm growing dahlias to now. I was asked if I was growing them for 'Fun or Show or both?' Well, if you put me on the spot, I'd say that I grow them because I love dahlias. So I guess that I grow them for fun but then if Dad thought that I had anything any good enough then he would tell me and I'd have a go. He looked at me suspiciously and asked if they were my dahlias or my Dad's (are you growing dahlias when it is actually your Dad growing them for you). humpf I laughed and said "No they are very much My dahlias". I explained that I do ask him questions but I do do things differently to him. Like I use seaweed feed and he doesn't.... "Oh, you grow Organic then..." (He visibly relaxed) (Obviously not a contender if you grow Organic) Well I try, except when the black fly attacked. Told him that I am only growing two poms. "Two pom varieties?" No, 2 plants. At which point he laughed. Humpf. "You are never going to win if you only have 2 plants" he said laughing. humpf I replied that I only need 1 bloom. To which he looked incredulous and obviously thought I didn't know what I was talking about. "What for county?" No for the town show. For the novice class I only need 1 bloom of either dahlia or chrysanthemums. Still very much sceptical, muttered that he should do the Novice class. I told him no it is only for Novices like me not experts like him. I only do the local show, never done the county shows like your Dad. Did he tell you he beat me by 1 point last year............... Humpf Roll on September...................................................................................................................................................................................
I don't know what I want to win more, the Novice dahlia class or my Dad to beat him this year. Bring it on. Don't like being laughed at. I'll let the dahlias do the talking. As Dad says you never know you might be lucky.
I think that I am my Father's daughter big time. Humpf

Moths don't usually do any harm. It is the larva of some species which can be destructive. The one in your pic I have seen but can't think of the name. Sometimes I can't think of my own name so nothing unusual there.

The 'pom man' is the type who would put people off showing. He sounds very rude.

I'm sure your dahlia will survive that amount of leaf loss Moonlight.

The poms look like honeycomb. Very pretty, especially Willows Violet. However, to my untrained eye the dahlia from Wilkinsons looks as if it is a good quality.

First read about it on one of the pom threads here.
