Jomanda (I didn't include a Mary's Jomanda because I didn't think any were good enough)

I promise to stop being a dahlia bore for bit but () But I'm going to be really cheeky and put a Downham Royal (but different bloom) here because otherwise he's on a different page to the rest of my 'Rogue's Dahlia Gallery'.Downham Royal

So what do you think, am I going to be good enough to have a go at a show without being laughed at?

Yes Moonlight, you are good enough. You are further forward in growing dahlia's, than I was in the year I entered my first show in a novice class. Some would say I should still be in the novice classes.

Some would say I should still be in the novice classes. Tel, anyone that said that is wrong Tel. I think that is the consensuses here and there are plenty of people that know what they are talking about to be right.

Exciting news and I really hope that I haven't left it too late to take a photo but my Monkey Nut plant has a flower! Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
Girlies have done a lot of 'helping' with my Dahlias. They like filling the watering cans with a hose. They even set themselves up a chair in the pathway corner for them to have a rest when they are doing their work. They have some how managed to wash a lot of manure so you can see 'bald' soil patches. I've warned them that Grandad won't be happy. Just been out with the slug pellets.
2 days ago we bought 2 packs of solar lights, one had a cracked stake and didn't charge. Got another not working yesterday and I have one that is flashing.
So I am still very much the Lady with the lamp at night.
Managed to finally get some of the girls' sunflowers planted but I think that there are just too many other exciting things going on and everything is taking so much longer. Fairy Pink Wellies has an extra 3 plants to plant but it was a case of accepting that her heart wasn't in it / mind distracted. They are very excited because they going out with Nanny and Aunty, shire horse and dog show. nb We are excited that they are going to have a fun day out with Nanny and my sister.
Tomatoes are bulking up nicely even though they are all over the place in the branch and stems themselves (and some are looking severely straggly) but whatever happens we will get some tomatoes this year.

I've been asked if I have put any tomato photos up yet? Apparently everyone else has done so, so far. I've just been out with the watering can and some maxicrop. I must confess that I haven't been using a lot of fertiliser / plant feed since the beginning. That includes my Dahlias. Got scared off after finding out about a fertiliser was doing more harm than good. Stuck with my very well rotted manure. Probably about to be ticked off for starving my plants but they seemed to be ticking along quite happily. Fair enough, if I do get so.
Anyway my have peppers but I think that they are maybe a bit too tall, wondering if maybe they should be wider. Better add photos. I'm not sure if I should use maxicrop tomato on them or not.
After hearing about people feeding their dahlias etc. trying to test what is ok, I've used maxicrop on the ones in the front garden and I've used maxicrop tomato fertiliser on my Happy Halloweens that are in pots in the back with my other dahlias. They look a bit scraggly at the bottom and if they come off worse for wear then so be it. Questions, questions, questions and apologies for being a dahlia bore over the last few pages. Just can't help myself. Anyway tomatoes and and peanut plant flower to follow - at some point busy day today. Girls are gone so we are trying to do as many things as we can.

Went round to my Mum and Dad's today. Dad's mystery dahlia still looks lovely and he has another ball dahlia that I liked. It is bright red and it one that he has given me, no flowers yet but looking forward to seeing it soon. I wasn't that keen on Jomanda's colour but mine is throwing up much better blooms than my Mary's Jomanda because they still have green dots in the centre. I was planning on keeping going with my Downham Royal. Not going to bother with poms next year and I won't keep my Franz tubers for another year because they have that green centre. It is highly unlikely that I'll grow Happy Halloween. That bright 'in your face' shade of orange has become wishy washing. Like it's colour had been leached out. Husband has decided that he likes the 'spikey ones' because they have a bit more personality about them, so I was going to give balls and poms a miss next year but that bright red, bright pink and deep purple of Downham Royal could make a potentially lovely recipe for a future new dahlia variety if I had a magic wand or magic bees. So maybe I'll give them another go next year after all. PS Non dahlia photos coming up... as promised.
