That is very true Tel....but much better to get advice from a small select group of growers who you know. What in your opinion will be the varieties to go for this year...that is sml/min decs/cactus/collarettes? If i was just starting out, i would be looking at the Winter Bulletin, for the varieties that won or did well at Harrogate Lou.
which ones did well Tel?

Are there any other beginners out there? I feel on my own a bit, all the experienced growers are very vigorous right now and are having a lot of fun and stresses with their tubers. I don't get mine till March. Anyone out there in a similar position or just grow them for the fun of it, without the stresses of shows? This is my second season with Dahlias. Much to learn, but all good fun!

Weston Pirate in min s/cactus. Oakwood Goldcrest beat the kiwis last year.
Comment made was that because it was a bad season take no notice of the results as everything was late and the usual winners will be back next year.

Not sure we can read anything into Dave Bates' comment, scrumpy. At Shepton Mallet both Trelyn Kiwi and Oakwood Goldcrest had the same number of vases in 1/2/3 place just that Oakwood had more firsts - probably because Dave Gillam can grow it better than Trelyn and he had a good show. At Harrogate, however, the best variety was Kiwi Gloria, which is grown extensively in northern areas. While the season may have been a factor, I think the more likely cause is the absence at the National show of those exhibitors who do grow the Kiwis for reasons other than a lack of blooms.

Seems like only yesterday the one to beat was Klankstad Kerkrade and its sports then Gloria Kiwi and its family. I used to grow Majestic K and Lady K but didn't have much idea of the best way to grow. later it was the kiwis. Only at local shows as I didn't like going in to London. The very first red card I got was for a Yellow MD called Boy Mick. That tells you how long ago that was There is always so much going on in the dahlia world it can be difficult to keep up. Now of course I don't bother too much about showing so no pressure if an earwig grabs a quick snack When you are a beginner and everything is new it is an adventure entering shows. After a few years you are more experienced and settle down a bit, less panicking. It is good to win but not a disaster if you don't. Just try never to feel intimidated by the 'Big Boys'. They won't eat you.

Based on 3 points for a first, 2 points for a 2nd and 1 point for a 3rd Tel I don't understand discussion in other thread about how Moonlights ('the Dianes, the Glorias, the Moonlights') dominate in the shows, if Cream Moonlight is 10th and Eastwood Moonlight is 21st in the joint?
I didn't say anything before because I don't know what I am talking about and have never been to a National.

Lots of varieties which won't necessary win at national level are shown at local shows up and down the country and often win prizes. Even top show varieties on the bench at a local show could be beat by one of the 'Lesser' varieties by better presentation and cleanliness (lack of disease etc.) due to inexperience. Goes for all exhibits not just dahlias. All things being equal though, the more perfect form of a top variety will win over an inferior one.

I only buy from the GC or the Parker's catalogue, as I get them wholesale price from there. If I type out the list of the ones I fancy, could someone please tell me if they're good 'doe-ers', remembering that I only want them for the garden?

This sounds silly somehow Geranium, but for me the show dahlias were better and far, far more pleasing than the garden centre sort. I can't grow inferior ones now and have got rid of them. I remember a Dutch white one which had weak stems. Although I did grow Doris Day in Scotland to good effect.

I'm still sticking with Parker's, because I get them in bulk and grow some in pots to sell at my open day - people do buy them. I just thought the 'experts' might have come across some of the ones I 'fancy'!
