does anyone know of a reasonably easy way to get rid of this, or have I got to continue digging each plant out by hand, it's just taken over this winter

I have this, but don't fuss about it because it is easy to get out. I have far more problematic weeds in my garden.

Roundup does a very effective job on it and any surviving bits can be howked out. As long as each individual taproot is removed then it wont come back. I will swap your creeping buttercup for my hairy bittercress ;D

Creeping buttercup has fibrous roots rather than a tap root. They are not persistent so as long as you remove all the growth points from the top of them, they will not re-shoot. You can have my Japanese anemone, now they regrow even after 5 years of Roundup.

When I am back to weeding again come the spring I will dig one out and take a pic. On the other hand I might just be getting confused with parsnips

I'm afraid I haven't an easy option to offer - I just get digging with my long-bladed trowel. They are a pest, but then, so are bindweed, hairy b, nettles and all the rest of the weedy 'gang'.

I agree with what Cherry said. There are many weeds worse than that. They dig up fairly easily.
