Could the old varieties still win prizes ? Or are the more recent ones so much better? They still win at the nationals, as dc says, usually in multi vase classes.

How big would the blooms be on a giant that was stopped once and left to develop naturally with about 10 stems disbudded but with not much de-shooting (not sure that is the correct terminology) .Would the size go down to medium? Not that size is important unless they are going to the show. Am thinking of general garden "decoration".

I don't think with a single stop you'd get 10 stems(laterals) from your giants. Certainly not Sir Alf or Fairway spur....if you are lucky you may get 6. If you want more of a show in your garden I'd go for a very early stop at about 4 pairs of leaves, hopefully mid April, then if you get 4 good laterals stop those at 3 pairs of leaves, and then let buds develop from the laterals that grow from the 2nd stop. You may struggle with Sir Alf as it grows naturally into a huge plant with very thick stems, so increasing the laterals will take up a lot of room. Depending on how many plants of each you have ordered, i'd grow some as they are meant to be grown, and some experiment with as above and see what happens. I think the Hamari's will produce good blooms, I don't think Fairway Spur will be that good. Silver City should be OK As to normal stopping time, if I stop Fairway Spur May 18th, they will flower up to mid August. Sir Alf needs stopping by the 5th May to flower at the same time.

Thanks for the advice Scrumpy. As I am only growing one of each this year I'll grow them for size .Next year I'll experiment from cuttings I'll take from the saved tubers. One more question. When you stop the plant can you take the top and use it as a late cutting?Would it have time to then go on and flower the same year?
