I got a fw bulbs into the ground, and harvested the last of the green tomatoes, they won't ripen now. Now what to do with around 9kg of green tomatoes....

We have just cleared the polytunnel of them and the unripe ones will be stored in a warm place and they will ripen up nicely. If you want them to ripen quickly then put them with a ripe banana.

I was reading about green tomatoes the other day, I think it was in one of the newspapers & apparently there is a point at which green tomatoes will go on to ripen & if they haven't reached that point they will never ripen, it's something internal/molecular/hormonal or whatever which isn't necessarily visible ( or 'feelable' if you squeeze them) so although lots will ripen if you put them on the windowledge/in a brown paper bag/with a banana/in storage with ripe ones, some will not ripen at all.

They just didn't ripen on the plants this year due to lack of sunshine up here. I'm keeping them stored and they are gradually ripening I already have 20 lots of pasta sauce in the freezer

This is the article I read from the plant biologist/garden writer from the Telegraph about green tomatoes & also avocados. They're trying to develop something which can tell you when to pick green tomatoes so that they will ripen successfully if picked at that point & also how to tell if an avocado is ripe, experimenting with light reflection & ultrasound so not much use to the average gardener! Green tomatoes- TelegraphI've got some green tomatoes lined up on the kitchen windowsill & some still in the greenhouse, might try 'Fried Green tomatoes' if they don't ripen.

I planted out some garlic cloves in the veg. bed & sowed a few tree peony seeds which I found on a couple of plants & put the pots in the mini greenhouse, not risking them on the ground after all my tree seeds got either drowned or eaten as soon as they came up.

I've got all the summer pots emptied or cut back and stored in the greenhouse. My gardener chappie is coming tomorrow as I have a few jobs for him; namely taking down and disposing of a length of trellis; digging out a small tree and lopping back a huuuuge fuschia.

Carried on clearing up after Ophelia and before Brian. Then the heavens opened and we got soaked just putting the tools away. That area of the garden is a real mess too. Looking at the weather forecast I do not think we will get much more done before Monday. Irritating.
