I tried growing common mushrooms from a kit once , nothing grew so I chucked it on the compost bin and when Iwent to add stuff to the bin a few weeks later there hugh mushrooms about 8" accross growing from the heap.

My husband came in when I was looking at that photo. He was appalled at the sight of these ugly mushrooms. Were they nice?
Ladybird was funny with her mushrooms.
WF are you using a mushroom kit too, or what exactly?

They do look a bit anaemic in that pic ;D tasted fine, the stem of the largest one was a bit chewy but it went down

WF are you using a mushroom kit too, or what exactly? It is mushroom spawn I used. I had an old polystyrene fish box and the compost is horse manure/barley straw. I mixed the spawn with the top inch of compost and covered it with damp news paper. In a few days the Mycelia should begin to grow. It didn't work last time I tried. I might scatter some on the compost heap, if it worked for ladybird it might work for me.

I've also read about pulling grass back on a lawn and placing it under there

I tried that last year, it didn't work. I got a very few to grow in a flower bed.

A great mushroom kit was on the A38 near Ashburton WF. It was/is a field with horses in it and a convenient layby alongside. Beat of all it was free and no work involved other than picking.

It is very good for all kinds of fungi around here, I wil keep my eye open when I'm down that way during mushroom season though.
