Lychnis viscaria splendens for early flowering (mine is in bud at the moment). Comes in white or pink and is evergreen. Forms a mat of green leaves and the flowers are about 9" tall. Reliable and hardy

Well - guess what I'd say! There are Geraniums for every purpose. If you want a non-invasive low growing type, look at the G. x cantabrigiense group. I also like Veronicas - I have a new one called 'Christy' in flower at the moment. The really prostrate ones flower later. I love this one - called 'Trehane'. Gold foliage and pretty blue flowers, about 6" tall. It's budding up at the moment.

Erysimum 'Constant Cheer' - this is a low growing one, not upright like Bowles' Mauve.

A question for you, Rosy. How low is low? What sort of height were you thinking of? (Sorry - two questions ;D)

I have several different Centaurea montana - the blue one of course, a white, a white with a purple centre, and a new purple one - oh, and I nearly forgot the almost black one! They're such good do-ers.
Then there's a low-growing Knautia macedonica with variegated leaves called 'Thunder and Lightning'. Great plant - it flowers on and on. Are Astrantias too tall? Tradescantias are good -you can get various colours.
You can tell I've been looking round my garden, can't you! ;D
