Hi all I was hoping you could help me with a little question. I was given a middling-sized Aloe Vera for Christmas, I shoved it on the bathroom windowsill and pretty much forgot it for 6months, as to be honest I don't find it v exciting to look at... I think it's decided the only way it's going to get my attention is by having babies. I've now got four or five of varying size all jammed into one pot. What sort of compost should I re-pot them into? I figure I can maybe give them away as gifts Do they need to be a certain size before I re-pot them? Thanks

You should just be able to separate them off by knocking the parent plant out of its pot and pulling down and back one of the basal shoots. They usually come away cleanly and you usually have a bit of root attached too. The smaller they are, the less likely there will yet be any root but they should still root so long as their is some basal stem. Only put into small thumb pots and water thoroughly every 10-14 days. Try and treat your remaining parent plant better too by watering thoroughly about the same time interval and feeding two or three times in summer with a liquid feed. You may be surprised when it flowers and you warm more to it!

Thanks very much Steve. I'll try and get hold of some smaller pots.
Can I use multi-purpose compost or do I need something special? Same question for liquid feed really - will you average pot of Miracle-gro or Baby Bio do?
