Last year I had a lovely collerette, called Danum Torch, nice colour combination and flowers where about 3" in size. Unfortunately I lost it through the winter, and had to throw it away. So this year I've gone back to a collerette I grew in my first year of growing dahlias, Fashion Monger. A nice big flower with great colour. You can find a picture of Danum Torch on the National Dahlia Collection.

Yes it certainly is Tel. I really like the look of the flower, although, no good for exhibition, but a lovely flower nontheless. Will probably re order one for next year

Not a lot happening on the dahlia front for me at the moment, although the tubers are coming into growth slowly. No cuttings taken so far but I have tuber divided a pink seedling from last year and will maybe use these as mother plants.
I won't be growing as many plants this year and mainly using plants for 'stock'. Only one show I can definitely have time off for, hence the lack of plants.

That's a shame mark, do you have to work weekends ?

I work every Sunday, Tel. I normally book holiday days for when the shows are on but this year some show dates have changed and I had already booked time off for when they would normally have been. Our local show is on a Saturday though, so as long as I can get some entries - whether they be dahlias, vegetables or whatever - for that I will be happy.

I can join in now, I've got 141 cuttings, of which two have now been potted up . But I will be potting up a lot more tomorrow, I hope . Brought 3 second hand bikini vases today, from a local gardening club, great value as well. All I need know is the know how to grow show dahlias, and the flowers to put in them!!!!

My first batch of cuttings in early Feb, went the same way as yours Tel, but much worse, nearly 75% lost. But batches two and three are so much better, about 5% lost. Due, thanks mainly to advice from the forum .

I've taken another 23 cuttings today, and got round to potting up 18 cuttings as well. Trapped in the greenhouse, while the wind and the rain battered the glass. I got a cutting from Halls, Minley Carol, which has really shot up from the fifth set of leaves. Leaving a six inch gap between the fifth and sixth set of leaves. I was wondering weather this has anything to do with to much sunlight in that part of the greenhouse. Don't know if I need to stop this pompon twice, or just leave it and see how it goes. Any advice would be very welcome

Any advice would be very welcome I think you will find this is caused by the exact opposite, lack of light !! It is very easy for rooted dahlia cuttings to become drawn. Leaving them too long before potting up and restricting light to the side of the plant as opposed to the top will make them shoot up to search out light. Slow proportioned growth is best.

I had the plant in a shaded part of the greenhouse, and the weather for the past few days has been very overcast. I'll move them out into the unshaded side of the greenhouse and see how it goes. I've been spraying the plants with maxicrop organic plant stimulant once a week, should I carry on doing this? And at what stage should I start using a high nitrogen feed, like champak 2, if at all. I'm sorry about all the questions Mark, but I really don't want ruin all yours, and others hard work, by not asking . Is there anything I should do with Minley Carol, or just leave it alone.
