Three shows in a week, Mark, made me feel tired just reading it, lol. Seriously though, congratulations on your successes, hope you do as well for the rest of the season. Also a big well done to scrumpy, ian and steve on their success at Southport, and everyone else who has staged exhibits/won cards so far. Yes 3 shows in one week has its pitfalls, the future show flowers get neglected so today is a full day cutting out nearly spent blooms and tying in ones that look like they may make the Midlands. Miniatures look OK but this wind is still getting at the bigger stuff even though they are under cover. Same for everyone so one can only try one's best. As long as I can make a reasonable entry to support my society then the rest is up to the judges. I'm stewarding in non entered classes and hope to help out at wisley. All this with a view to getting my judges ticket in the near future. I've heard the judging exam is not so good but the apprenticeship of working with experienced judges is far more beneficial to me.

Good luck for when you take your judging exam Mark the judging exam consists of seven classes with about 5-6 vases in each class there are obvious faults you have to find for disqualification. ie supported dahlia blooms, correct number of blooms, correct classification in each class, you also will be asked to name a variety of dahlia one in commerce. Then you have to place the vases in 1st 2nd and 3rd position. The most points you lose if for not spotting the NAS. You are right it is a v good idea to go to shows and try to steward with an experienced judge. The National and Harrogate is an ideal training ground and we are always looking for stewards so I will add you to my list of stewards for Harrogate. There will be a judging exam 2015 at Harrogate (if the numbers of people come forward) it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the exhibit and blooms in the show as this if where the blooms come from for the exam, spare blooms. Good luck this season

Good luck this season Thanks Ian, Yes I intend to do a proper apprenticeship rather than rush into it. I think the exam in 2015 might be in line with what I was planning. I will be at Harrogate this year, not sure what I'm showing as the weather has shifted a lot of my flowers forward. Even so i would love to steward, but please bare in mind while I'm not completely new to dahlias I am still very green with regards judging and stewarding so not too many clips around the ear unless I need it. I will PM my email and contact details for your records. Thanks Mark

Is there a show for worst leaves? Seriously, got severe problems. Have been spraying with systhane and rose clear, stopped for last 3 weeks because of shows, and on returning from Southport things are deteriorating rapidly. The upper leaves show signs of powdery mildew, but what else they have I don't know. Can't see any mites, but I do suffer with them, but never this bad. Most plants are affected, back and front garden. Help gratefully accepted. even the stems on this one have brown marks back of leaf

Hi let's hope it is not Sclorotina check the affected laterals by cutting the stem off and split it down its length do this away from your soil if it is sclorotina then there will be what looks like a small brown bean and if allowed to go onto the ground will create spores in the soil and create problems for next year and then you have a problem, it is best to burn the plant and the plants next to the infected plants. Or it could just be the Basel leaves are dying off and may be spreading to the upper leaves and this is one of the reasons why it is very beneficial to strip out the Basel leaves once or twice through the season as I do. Mildew get it sprayed straight away to keep it in check. All the best

I managed to get two beds covered yesterday, may be able to do the last one this Sunday if the forecast for light winds is correct.
