Thankyou everyone! Had a really good day! It was a learning experience and great to watch the experienced growers staging, ive only ever been to village shows where most people stage at home, so to see some staging first hand was great! Everyone was dead good crack!

Hope its at least dry tomorrow!!....despite not feeling well, Husband is going to take me to Halls of Heddon for their Special Open Day tomorrow. I think he really wants to sample Sue's cakes!! Forecast looks better than it has been lately for tomorrow so fingers crossed. 30 cakes and 8 tray bakes done over the last 36 hours. All that is needed now is a good nights sleep and the sun to shine. I will need to do some more dead heading in the morning and cut a few blooms so it will be an early start. Our trial beds are looking pretty good though but unfortunately some of the giants and mediums have suffered a bit with the continual damp weather. Actually saw the sun at 5pm today!! Look forward to seeing you tomorrow Lou..

Would your dad remember Wallace Farr? I was talking to him last week at the Wrekin Show. Bit sad in a way, as he suffers from Parkinsons so can't grow anything, but still as committed as ever. Wallace won the giant dahlia championships at the nationals many years ago, and was also a good Chrysanth grower. He rues the arrival of Sir Alf Ramsey because he reckons everyone grows that one at the expense of other good giants.

Moonlight's father would remember Wallace Farr scrumpy. It is great to talk to the old people in any hobby. Parkinsons is a sad thing to witness.

Sorry you could not make it Lou. We had a brilliant day! Hope your husband is feeling better soon. We had over 500 visitors but most importantly raised well over £1000 for the National Gardens Scheme. Not too many cakes left either out of the 30 baked. We had visitors from Co.An trim, Perth, Dunbar, Cumbria, Staffordshire and lots of exhibitors from the North East and Yorkshire. We had to do a lot of dead heading this morning with the help of some local NDS members. Still a lot of colour to come if the weather holds. Glad to see you had a good show DC, especially after all the miserable weather. The Northumberland and Durham show was apparently pretty good yesterday with some good entries-shsme I did not get. Sounds like your Ryecroft Zoe sport did well Scrumpy.

My dad remembers Wallace mainly from the time he put up a Chrysanthemum trade display at Stafford back in the 90's. He came up in conservation the other day on the way back from Harry Lawson's funeral. I was chatting to Tom Bebbington both at Wisley and Harrogate -another great grower of giants. Although still growing, he is having to cut back but still fully committed. My dad himself is 90 now and although struggling physically I still get him up to our fields to go through and assess all the trial varieties with me.

Lovely photos dahliadave Are there any photos of the Tom McClelland seedling in the field? If you do have any I would love to see it. Saw a photo of it ages ago and have been hopeful ever since.
